How can we succeed in creating more affordable housing within the existing urban building stock? What political, planning and practical approaches are needed to ensure that existing buildings and neighbourhoods are developed in a sustainable and high-quality manner, whilst maintaining social balance? Around 40 experts explored these questions as part of the project Building & Living: Platform for networking, synthesis and transfer. Togehter, they developed concrete options of actions for the national, regional and local governments. These will be published in early September in two publications in the acatech IMPULSE series. 

At our expert conference “Reimagining the existing building stock! Perspectives for affordable housing in cities” we will bring together experts from academia, industry, government, and professional practice to discuss these issues: with keynote speeches and panel discussions on the project findings, practical approaches to more efficient processes and strategies, social and technical aspects, and real-world examples. As part of threee panel discussions, we look forward to exchanging views with our guests on specific challenges and opportunities. Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction (BMWSB) will also contribute to the conference with opening addresses and keynote inputs.

Another key part of the event is a gallery walk, where selected projects present their approaches to improving affordability. It offers an opportunity to talk to those involved, share experiences and gain inspiration for one’s own practice. 

The conference is aimed at experts from academia, industry and civil society, as well as representatives in the fields of construction and housing. Participation is free of charge, but places are limited, so registration is required. Please register via this link.
