Making experiential knowledge from innovative practical projects accessible to others

Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) presents Living Lab Innovation Portal

Living labs make it possible to test new technologies, business models, or regulatory approaches under real-world conditions. With the Living Lab Innovation Portal, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) now offers a central platform for consultation, information, networking, and knowledge transfer on the topic of living labs and regulatory sandboxes. The goal: “to facilitate the practical implementation of living labs as well as knowledge transfer and regulatory learning.”

Reading time:

Part of the portal is an interactive map that illustrates the wide range of living labs already in use across Germany – in areas such as urban development, circular economy, energy, water management and climate protection, mobility, digitalization, eGovernment, and public administration. It shows how new solutions can be implemented in practice and how actors from government, business, academia, and civil society can be effectively connected.

The project “Building & Living: Platform for networking, synthesis and transfer” also adopts the living lab approach – with its own digital mapping, developed with scientific support from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and officially launched on June 25 during a webinar. At this virtual event, living labs and best practices will be presented that can serve as models for creating affordable, climate- and resource-efficient housing in existing urban structures. The aim is to make the experiential knowledge from innovative practical projects accessible to others.
